March in PA

March in Pennsylvania means maple sugaring!

We went to a demo at a nearby state park, and while Sariah thought much of it was "boring" (the part where the park workers actually tried to explain the process to us), there were fun moments along the way.

Sariah was chosen to carry the pail into the sugar bush.

Preston got to help drill the hole in the tree.

Everyone got to taste the maple sap, which ran freely from the tree even before they could get the tap inserted.

Then the bucket was hung on the tree.

After this, we went back to the sugar shack and watched the syrup being boiled down.  I'm sure there are trees in our yard that we could probably tap if I was ambitious enough.

After watching the demonstration, we took advantage of the beautiful day to go down near the small lake at the park and play.

They got to play for all of two minutes before we saw the sign saying this beach was closed.
