The Derby

Now that we're finally Cub Scout parents, we got our first opportunity to help Dallin make a car and race in the Pinewood Derby.  Well, truth be told, I didn't have much to do with the car.  James is not a builder kind of guy, so he wasn't sure he would have much expertise to share with Dallin.  Luckily for James, he knows the right people, and he got our bishop to help cut out the car and put the weights on.  Dallin did most of the painting himself, as you can tell.  We got to the church, and most of the cars were so fancy you had to wonder if the boy did much work at all on it.  Dallin's car definitely looked like a 9-year-old painted it!

Since this was our first Pinewood Derby as a family, we just figured we'd go and have a good time, and Dallin would learn a lot about sportmanship and appreciating other kids' talents at car-making.  And then we'd know what to do differently for next year.  Boy were we in for a surprise!

I about fell off my chair when Dallin's little car came in first in it's first round!  And came in first again the second time it raced!  (Picture above: the boys checking the times.  This track was really cool and had sensors to show which cars came in first, second, etc. and then transmitted that data to a computer at a nearby table.)

Yeah, Dallin came in first place!  His little car (whose wheel came off during every race and had to be taped back on to run again) won ten out of twelve heats!  And the two he didn't win, he came in second!  For those of you who know just how competitive this child is, you can only imagine how exciting this was for him.  Though to his credit, he did manage to be relatively gracious about the whole thing.

This face says it all.
