After some thought, I decided to turn our formal living room into our homeschool space. Yeah, it's kind of tacky to walk right into a school room. But the room was basically wasted space, and it made no sense to crowd into the kitchen area and have to be constantly moving our school supplies in order to have meals when we had a practically-empty room just begging to be used. I'm so glad I did this! I love our little school room, and I can't imagine, as disorganized as I can sometimes be, not having everything right there in it's place. I cleaned it today so I could take pictures:
This is the view when you walk in. I pulled a spare table out of our office, and once again, that was a really smart move. We use it all the time! We do have to share the chairs with the dining room. I rearranged my vast stacks of music so I could avoid having to buy another bookcase. I made the chalkboards myself! I bought the wood at Home Depot, cut it myself with our table saw, and painted it with chalkboard paint. Chalkboards are a staple in a Waldorf classroom--and so is colored chalk, both for drawings and for writing. I ran the string across the wall above them so we can display our artwork.
And, we have our little nature table, library basket, and reading corner. Using the rocking chair gives it such a homey feel--exactly what I was going for! The dog destroyed the blinds we had in the windows, so I replace them with some inexpensive sheer white curtains that filter the light and give the room a nice, dreamy feel.
I pulled all of Sariah's toys into the school room too, so she could play while I work with Dallin. But her response, when I told her this, was, "No! I am not going to be playing! I will be doing ALL the school that Dallin does!" And she's kept quite well to her word (although a good batch of playdough or a sink full of water can usually distract her when we need her to be distracted...)
