Sariah did a three week language arts block in January. The main purpose of it was to introduce the lower case alphabet and to do some simple writing and reading. I told a story from Marsha Johnson to bring the lower case letters. Then we finished up the rest of the weeks with some good old Grimms fairy tales. These will be our last fairy tales for a good long time. Next month we are heading into a bit of second grade material and trickster tales, Anansi the Spider Stories from West Africa, to be exact.
We did a lot of beeswax modelling along with drawing and writing in her main lesson book. Unlike Dallin, Sariah loves to come up with summaries of the stories we do. She generally has very specific ideas on what she will write in the book.
The Frog Prince
The Golden Goose
Brother and Sister
The Poor Miller's Boy and His Cat
A spiral painting that Sariah really enjoyed doing. (The photo should be turned on its side...)
I purchased some beginning readers, and Sariah has been making good progress working through them. She is really enjoying learning to read. Also, for each story summary she wrote in her book, I chose one fairly easy word from her writing, and she wrote it in her "word book", then we brainstormed rhyming words, which she also wrote down. In this way she is learning patterns of words.
