The second day of our vacation we spent the entire day in Capitol Reef National Park.
Preston checking out a really cool bug.
Capitol Gorge.
Preston hiked like a champ for awhile, but eventually decided that playing the dirt was what life was really all about. He also seemed to find every patch of mud along the trail.
Preston was thrilled to join Dallin in this little hollow in the rock.
The tanks: These are the actual "waterpockets" which give this aread it's name of Waterpocket Fold. Hiking up here was Dallin's favorite part of the day. He loved going on a "strenuous" hike.
Preston was content to throw rocks in the water, but Sariah was not happy until she had thoroughly soaked herself in the river. Multiple
requests commands to get out of the water fell on deaf ears. Of course once she finally came out she immediately began crying that she was wet and cold. Preston was also covered in rich, wet mud. So James took the younger two back to our cabin to change clothes while Dallin and I went on another hike. This would have been heaven for the kids who grew up here 100 years ago, but oh, I feel for their mothers and the laundry!
Dallin and I hiked Cohab Canyon, and I have to say, it was so wonderful to spend one-on-one time with my boy. He is quite the hiker, and quite fun to be around when it is just him without any younger siblings.
We met up with these beautiful horses, who were so gentle and friendly to let us pet them. Preston was sound asleep, but imagine his utter delight when he woke up to find horses literally six inches from his face:
Picking apples was the part of the day I was most excited about. In the park there is a historic town called Fruita where there are orchards that the public can pick from. If we had come a week or two earlier, we would have been able to pick apples, peaches, and pears. But we were happy with the apples and went home with over 10 pounds. My mom remembers coming to Fruita as a young girl to pick fruit with her mother.
Here are the Fremont Petroglyphs that we learned about in our studies. Dallin looked at these through the binoculars for quite a long time.
Sariah freaked me out. I was sure we were going to carry her out in a stretcher. The girl knows no fear, and leaped and bounded over the many rock formations without reservation.
