This is my third attempt at posting this--argh! Dang blogger! And now Sariah just woke up, and Dallin will be home from early day any minute. Man, nap time goes by too quickly! This will be much shorter than I'd originally planned.
Anyway, yesterday we tried wet felting for the first time. Felting is the process of making felt from loose wool. It is a typical "Waldorf-y" craft. And it is so much fun! Definitely a full-on sensory activity! I am quite amazed at how the Waldorf things are spot-on for my kids. Everything we've tried has been a big hit!
So basically, you take loose wool (ours had been pre-dyed), form it into a small ball with your hands, then dip it in hot, soapy water. Then you roll it in your hands, putting pressure on it. You keep dipping and rolling, sometimes adding another layer of wool if you choose. And eventually you have a nice, hard little ball of felt. You can use tiny ones for beads, or, in our case, they just became little balls to throw and catch.
Dallin's initial reaction was to complain about the feel of the soapy water on his hands. But he ended up being the one who had the best time, and continued to "felt" long after Sariah and I were done. Sariah, of course, was just happy to be able to play in soap and water without getting in trouble.
