Who knew that a simple family tradition could be fraught with so many challenges?
Every year on Christmas Eve, our children open one gift, a new pair of pajamas. Last year I found Sariah an adorable pair of fleecy footie PJs. When Dallin realized that's what she was getting, he was bound and determined that he needed a pair too. When I said that it might be difficult to find some in his size, he was disappointed and furious. So guess who did some last minute running all over town to find footie PJs in a size 6? Do you have any idea how hard it is to find footie PJs in a size 6? But I did it, and everyone was happy on Christmas Eve.
So today I had some great coupons for the outlets in Park City and thought this would be my perfect chance to find our Christmas Eve PJs. I walked into Carter's and immediately saw that all their fleecy footies were only $8. Perfect! The only problem is, there were no blanket sleepers in Dallin's size, and the ones that were close to his size had dorky, babyish prints. OK, so I'd get something else for Dallin. But getting something else for Dallin meant that I'd have to get something else for Sariah, because there is no way I'm going to endure arguing over PJs on Christmas Eve of all nights. (Which, trust me, is exactly what would happen.) The other deals in the store were pretty good, but not quite like PJs for only $8 apiece. And I had to pass them up because heaven forbid Sariah should get fleecy footies and not Dallin.
I was just laughing at myself as I stood there in a store full of cute PJs, trying to figure out how to do this fairly and with the least amount of angst possible. A choice that should have taken five minutes dragged out for at least 20 as I tried to decide how to make this work and keep everyone happy. I found a pair of fleecy NON-footies with a cool basketball motif and had just about decided to do that when I realized that the shirt had a design that would scratch Dallin's skin from underneath, and my sensory-sensitive little boy would never be able to handle that. In the end, neither child got fleecies, but Sariah's do have feet on them, and I'm just going to say my prayers from now until Christmas that a year will make a difference and Dallin will have outgrown the immaturity of wanting footie PJs. Either that or he will accept the explanation "there weren't any in your size". A mom can dream, can't she?

FYI I've seen the footie jammies at Target for big kids. Honestly I think they look kind of ridiculous, but if you NEED some to keep them happy sometimes it's worth it. My kids wanted some when they were size 8/10 and they had them there.
